Festive Fibers studio is located in
beautiful and historic, Alstead, NH. Here in the Connecticut River Valley
on the New Hampshire / Vermont border we are close to interstate 91 as well
as Amtrak’s Vermonter from Washington through to Bellows Falls, VT
(7 miles from here). This is a gorgeous area for beautiful rural country
drives, golf and antiquing. So bring a friend for the drive and evening
fun! It's a wonderful way to have a beautiful New England getaway. See you

Felt Flowers for Valentine's"

We always have a very fun time in this flower class, it is a treat to be creating
felt flowers all day but, add to it, a decandent lunch with chocolatey desserts
is included! And I call that a recipe for really treating yourself for
Valentine's! This class is a one day class, perfecting the principles of placing
shading into your felt images, to create a motif that really pops from your composition.
We work on shading, highlighting and color contrast, while using a photo reference
of your favorite flower.

"Color
Theory at NEFS"
February

As
so many of you know already, I love teaching this class. It is a great way to
learn about creating beautiful color combinations, and how to use visual inspiration
for a color story, which colors work well together and why, and why you like certain
colors? The day is full of small and engaging exercises with a critique after
each so students can learn more from their fellow students as well! The process
is gentle and non scientific and fun. This is a non-felting class, where we work
with paint chips. Students build a workbook through out the day for future reference.

WITH YOU: Scissors, pencils, tape and/or glue, a colored pencil
or watercolor set (just in case)

"Shibori
Dyed Feather Weight Scarf"

I have spent years dyeing
fiber for felting, yarns for knitting and fabrics for hooking, and with each project,
though I know what I am going for I find that the surface design element of each
comes moslty at the end when each piece is finished. I love all
things traditional textiley and shibori, being one tradition I would love to play
with, is an age old tradition where-by creating ties, stitches and wrappings,
on a piece of fabric, and then dye it, you get the dye and pattern all in one!
I like this concept, and of course shibori can be extremely intricate an beyond
amazing in the time that it could take to do a complicated design.
I will begin the day with
a brief slide show of traditional and contemporary shibori work, students 2-3
make feather weight merino scarves, and then spend the first half of the second
day tieing twisting and wrapping their scarves into pattern. The dye process
takes about 3 hours and when finished we will have a huge assortment pattern
and color. This course has it both, a llittle bit of felting and a little bit
of dyeing and of course hand work, think stitching, and tie dyeing.

which may get wet/dyed.

"FROGS!
at the Nature Museum at Grafton"

Kids and adults will have
fun at this workshop! We form the frogs bodies by wet felting hand forming the
shapes. Detail can be added to the frogs by using a felting needle (age specific
for the needles, please)

"Felt
Ottoman" Memorial Day Weekend May 29, 30 & 31
Saturday, Sunday & Monday (Three
Day Workshop - 9:30 AM - 4:30PM ) ALSTEAD, NH
This class is awsome where
students have the opportunity to design a piece of furniture for their home.
Make the felt fabric for and construct and upholster their own ottoman! A fast
paced class with lots of different steps on each day, students leave the session
very accomplished and in the possession of a brand new beautiful ottoman! Day
ONE: Design and lay out fiber for all areas of ottoman. Day TWO: Wet felt all
fabrics, (fabrics dry over night) and Day THREE: Students upholster their ottomans.
Using furniture quality cardboard cores, student, glue, drill and assemble shape,
cover with foams, and then sew their fabric covers, adding trims or embellishments.
***Previous felt making
experience necessary, as well as the ability to use power tools, and sewing
machines. Student may use prefinished wooden feet, casters or pre paint your
feet before arriving to the Festive Fibers studio

"Dye
Pots! Acid Dyeing techniques for wool fiber"
June 19 (
9:30AM-4:30PM) ALSTEAD, NH
I dye fiber
for felting all the time, though the technique I learned many years ago can be
applied to yarns as well. I love the ability to not be restricted by someone else's
color line. The studio will have dye stations set up, with fiber tagged for each
student to use a variety of color baths and dye techniques, from solid batch dyeing
to rainbow or casserole dyeing. I use Pro-Chem Wash Fast Acid dyes and Cushing.
I do not measure dye stuffs, but dye from premixed concentrates. We will review,
set time, temperature, prep and clean up.
BRING
WITH YOU: Shoes/clothing which may get wet/dyed, apron, goggles.

"Rug
Stomp"
July 3th-4th

By far my most popular workshop. Students lay out and felt
a patterned felt rug in two days. Day one the rug is laid out, discussions on
technique, design layouts and color balance are how we start a leisurely creative
day. Day two is all felting! (using hands, feet - hence the stomp part, lots of
energy, and, well heck anything else that might help the process along!) This
class is not for the timid, it is very physical and an absolute
blast!

which may get wet/dyed.

for beginners or experienced felters looking ot improve their technique or
heck just a day to make felt! As in all my classes, we love talking about
the use of color, envisioning how colored fiber felts in its fabrics, and
of course a day spent perfecting patterned felt techniques.

"Felt
Sculptures" CANCELLED

Over the years, I have
created many 3-D felts. Some are quite sculptural. In this class, we design
a Sculptural Object (Doll, animal or floral) Using aperatures as the
internal structures, students learn how to build up form, and layer the fiber,
add on detail using felting needles and shaping techniques will be demonstrated,
the final sculpture can be skim felted.
Day One: each student will
review their idea, size and how to build is determined, and structures are built
and wrapped. Day Two and Day Three, Students create their sculpture

Portraits Weekend:
3 Days, 3 Artists, 3 Different Media"

Puzzle Portraits
Weekend is a unique, mixed-media workshop of felt, fabric, and found objects.
We invite you to join three innovative artists working in three different media
over three days to create nine interlocking sections that assemble to form three
complete and unique works of art with their own hanging display!
Day 1: Found Object Portrait
with Janette Schuster
Day 2: Felted Portrait with Nicole
Chazaud Telaar
Day 3: Fabric and Polymer Clay Portrait with Loribeth
Robare
On each day, you'll work
in a different medium to create three portrait sections (head, torso with arms,
legs) while learning basic techniques for felt, fabric, or found objects. You'll
learn ways to link the sections together, like puzzle pieces, to form a portrait.
At the end of the weekend, you will have three complete portraits with nine
interchangeable sections you can mix or match. You'll even have
a display for hanging
your portraits. Whether you think of them as dolls, mobiles, puppets, sculptures,
or assemblages, you'll come away with three truly unique and interactive works
of art and an introduction to three fun art media.

Day
1: Found Object Portrait with Janette Schuster
Found objects are simply a blast to collect and even more fun to use in
art. Come learn how as you make your first portrait of the weekend. On
this first day, you'll use collage and assemblage techniques to make three
portrait sections. For the head, you'll collage onto wood a photo of someone
in your family, or choose a vintage photo from my stash of "anonymous
ancestors." You'll learn basic techniques for adding color, imagery,
and embellishments to wood. For the torso, arms, and legs, you'll find
out how to choose, alter, and attach found objects, learning several attachment
methods called "cold connections" that outshine glue in durability.
You'll also
find out how to cut, drill, age, embellish, finish, and assemble found
objects to form a truly one-of-a-kind art piece. As a finishing touch,
you'll learn how to use wire to make simple hooks and rings for hanging
all three of your puzzle portraits. Whether you are brand new to found
object art or looking for inspiration to take your art in a fresh direction,
this is the workshop for you.
Includes: precut
wood, paint, photocopies of anonymous ancestors, nails, wire, jump rings,
attachment hardware, antiquing solutions, some embellishments, written
instructions, use of communal tools, and assorted other items

DAY
2: Felt Portraits with Nicole Chazaud Telaar
Welcome to the colorful world of felting! On the second day you will create
a rabbit or other animal portrait as you learn and use a variety of felting
techniques. These will include making a felt ball shape for the head,
wet felted limbs, and enhancing a pre-felted ball shape for the torso.
You will also learn to attach add-ons, such as ears and/or and a funky
cute hat, and tails. Wet felting and (dry) needle felting techniques will
both be used: wet felting to make a patterned skirt, cape, and flowers;
needle felting to form the shape of the face, attach the flowers, and
embellish your portrait (by adding a pattern or even making tiny needle
felted objects). Finally, you'll learn to attach your three felt portrait
sections using a variety of methods including sewn-in wire hooks, flowers,
buttons, collars, and other felt creations.
Includes: fiber,
felting needles, scissors, sewing needle and assorted threads, buttons
and other bits, written instructions, and the use of communal tools; We
use water on this day for some of the felting, so expect to get a bit
wet and dress accordingly, rbing assorted fun button or other personal
embellishments if you want.

DAY
3: Fabric and Polymer Clay Portrait with Loribeth Robare
On Day 3 you will be creating a lovely "Flower Queen" fashioned
from vibrant new or vintage fabrics (or both!), trims, buttons, paper,
and polymer clay. You'll be a fiber artist-for-a-day, which means it's
all about the fabric! So, you will begin by rummaging through my extensive
stash of vintage and new fabric so that you can find just the right combination
that speaks to you. And DO bring your own favorite fabrics and trims,
since you can NEVER have too many choices! Using the simple doll-making
techniques of sewing and stuffing, you'll create the main body parts.
Then you will become familiar with a versatile medium for doll making-polymer
clay-as you sculpt the limbs and head. You will also learn how to paint
facial features as well as how to give your portrait face a distressed
crackle finish. Assembling the parts and creating a button joint will
come next. Lastly, as the crowning finish, you will create a vintage crepe
paper flower tiara.

trim, buttons, paint, polymer clay, antiquing solutions, pre-painted crepe
paper, wire, tape, stuffing, thread, attach-
ments, glue, written instructions, and use of sewing machines and oven

"Art
is...You!"

This
year's theme is The Wizard of Oz in all of it wonderful and wicked forms! If
you are looking for a fully immersed creative retreat with lots of
new friends and lots of diversity this is the event for you! At the time of
writing this I am not able to list the classes I will be teaching, but let's
just say I am fully in the spirit of Dorothy and her friends, felting zaniness
all the way!

Day
one we make our cone shaped hat, using wet patterned felting techniques, and
lots of hand forming. Day two we make embellishments, style, block and steam
our hats into wonderful creations! This second day uses all shaping techniques,
such as wet felting for shaped flowers, and needle felting for critters like
birds or both combined.
Sunday and Monday
#1003 - Munchkin Slippers
Day One we wet-felt and
hand shape our bootie or slip on slippers. Day Two we create the Munchkin flowers
and needle felt embellishments for the toes and body of the slippers.
